Every profile

50 people who built this industry, one page each.

01Aarohi Patel

Actor. She was a child actor in 1999 and waited sixteen years for a leading role. She has now made ten films and not one of them is in another language.

02Abhishek Jain

Director and producer. He waited fourteen years for his first National Award, and when it finally arrived on 18 July 2026 the winning film had not yet sold a single ticket.

03Abhishek Shah

Director, writer and producer. India's top film prize went to a first time director whose film had no lead role, and the jury underlined the point by handing a second award to all thirteen of its women together.

04Aditya Gadhvi

Singer. He has released seventy videos in fourteen years, the scarcest catalogue of any Gujarati artist we have measured, and the song that made him a national name lives on somebody else's channel with more views than half his own life's work.

05Aishwarya Majmudar

Playback singer. She is the only singer credited on the film that restarted Gujarati cinema, the film that won it a National Award and the film that broke its box office record, and roughly half of that record is filed under a misspelling of her surname.

06Anand Pandit

Film producer and distributor, founder of Anand Pandit Motion Pictures. His company lists thirty six titles and ten of them are films it did not make, which is the part of the job nobody puts on a poster.

07Darshan Jariwala

Actor and theatre producer. A director wanted him to play Gandhi in a play, lost him to a diary clash, and came back years later with a film so he could finally have him.

08Deeksha Joshi

Actor. In 2025 she put out five feature films in two languages and then started a Hindi daily soap in December, which is what it looks like when an actor refuses to pick a side.

09Dilip Joshi

Actor. He was in two of the biggest Hindi films of his generation and the offers still dried up, so in 2008 he took a sitcom part and turned a Gujarati businessman into the character more Indians have watched than any other.

10Divyang Thakkar

Actor, screenwriter and film director. Regional actors who move to Bombay go there to act. He went to write and direct, and ten years after winning a Gujarat State Best Actor award he was handing pages to Ranveer Singh on a Yash Raj Films set.

11Esha Kansara

Actor. She is from Ahmedabad, and it took seven years in Mumbai before an Ahmedabad film industry was willing to give her a lead.

12Geeta Rabari

Folk singer. She has the largest Gujarati creator account we have found anywhere, and the only place her photograph appears on English Wikipedia is a list of women whose articles have not been written.

13Hemant Chauhan

Bhajan and folk singer. His Gujarati encyclopedia entry says the most important thing about his singing is that every single word can be heard and understood, which sounds like faint praise until you remember that a bhajan is a text and he is the reason forty five years of them survived intact.

14Hiten Kumar

Actor. He carried the reported Rs 22 crore hit that proved the old Gujarati industry still had an audience, then came back a quarter of a century later as the man who destroys a family in Vash, and English Wikipedia still opens his biography with a single eleven word sentence.

15Hitu Kanodia

Actor and politician. A state jury gave him a Best Child Artist prize when he was ten, the Gujarat electorate gave him a legislative seat when he was forty seven, and in 2024 Bollywood decided the only man who could play the part he had just played was Ajay Devgn.

16Ishaan Randeria

Screenwriter, director and producer. He spent two films turning his father's stage character into Gujarati cinema's first working film series, and then wrote a third one, from nothing, about a son who cannot talk to his father.

17Janki Bodiwala

Actress. Bollywood remade her Gujarati film with Ajay Devgn, R. Madhavan and Jyothika, replaced every other lead from the original, and kept exactly one person: the dental graduate from Ahmedabad whose performance it could not work out how to redo.

18Jignesh Barot

Folk singer. In July 2025 his family built a shrine in front of their house to a broken Bajaj Super, and that scooter explains his career better than any of the fourteen film soundtracks he is credited on.

19Karan Vyas

Screenwriter. Line up everything he has written and the same man keeps walking in: someone the system has already decided to prosecute, in a room where the decision is being defended.

20Kinjal Dave

Folk and garba singer. She has the largest verified audience of any artist working in the Gujarati language, she built it on twenty eight singles and no film soundtrack, and the song that built it is the one she spent 2019 defending in court.

21Kinjal Rajpriya

Actor. The first science fiction film Gujarati cinema ever attempted and the first Gujarati film ever released in Kannada have exactly one name in common, and it is hers.

22Kirtidan Gadhvi

Folk singer. He has two performing arts degrees and once taught music at a university, which makes him the most formally qualified man on the Gujarati folk circuit and the one who started archiving it online nine years before anybody else bothered.

23Krishnadev Yagnik

Writer and director. He has written nine Gujarati titles and directed eight of them, and the one he gave away to another director is the clearest evidence of what he actually sells, which is the page and not the chair.

24Malhar Thakar

Actor. Thirty five Gujarati film credits since 2012 is not a highlight reel, it is a work record, and it is the reason Gujarati cinema now has a release calendar instead of a good year every so often.

25Manan Desai

Stand up comedian. His personal YouTube channel is two and a half years older than the one he co-founded and a fraction of its size, which is the clearest thing anyone can tell you about how he has spent fifteen years.

26Manasi Parekh

Actor, singer and producer. She spent sixteen years being cast by other people, then built a company, paid for her own film, and won the National Film Award for Best Actress inside it.

27Maulik Nayak

Actor and playback singer. He is in the film that took ten Gujarat State Awards, the film that won Gujarati cinema its first National Award for Best Feature Film, and the film that holds the record for a Gujarati opening day, and his name has been above the title exactly once.

28Mehul Surti

Music director. The Gujarati revival is usually credited to its directors, but the one name that turns up across its satire, its period feminist drama, its chamber pieces and its war epic belongs to the composer.

29Mikhil Musale

Film director and producer. He has directed exactly one Gujarati film, and the fastest way to understand it is not to watch it but to look at where everyone who worked on it ended up.

30Mitra Gadhavi

Actor, writer and lyricist. Krishnadev Yagnik cast three men nobody had heard of in Chhello Divas in 2015, two of them turned into the leading men who now open Gujarati films, and the third one took a short film to the Venice Film Festival, where no Gujarati film had ever been.

31Mooralala Marwada

Sufi folk singer. He is the eleventh generation of Meghwal singers in one Kutch village, his touring band is two nephews and a grandson, and when the only Gujarati film ever to win Best Feature Film needed an opening voice it went to him rather than to anyone in Mumbai.

32Nilay Chotai

Film producer and real estate developer. Six Gujarati producer credits across nine years and not one of them is his alone, which is exactly why the rest of the industry now finances films the way he does.

33Niren Bhatt

Screenwriter and lyricist. The highest grossing Hindi film of 2024 was written by a man whose entire feature writing runway was three Gujarati scripts, and who is still writing Gujarati songs.

34Ojas Rawal

Actor, anchor and comedian. English Wikipedia names him in thirty-two articles and has never written one about him, which makes him the most thoroughly documented invisible man in Gujarati entertainment.

35Pan Nalin

Film director, writer and producer. He had to leave Gujarat and spend twenty years shooting other people's countries before he could afford to point a camera at his own, and the first film he made in his own language is the one India sent to the Oscars.

36Paresh Rawal

Actor. He has no drama school on his record, only a commerce degree and a Gujarati stage, and in September 2020 the President of India put him in charge of the National School of Drama.

37Pratik Gandhi

Actor. He built his entire case in Gujarati, on stage and on screen, while still drawing a Reliance Infrastructure salary, and the national industry had to come to Gujarati to cast him.

38Raam Mori

Screenwriter and short story writer. He won a literature award for his first book, then adapted a story out of that same book into a feature film, which is not how anybody else in Gujarati cinema got hired.

39Rahul Bhole

Screenwriter, director and editor. He took a philosophical Gujarati novel that had sat unfilmed for twenty years, turned it into the National Award winner, and then went straight back to making comedies, because the comedies are what pay for the novels.

40Sachin-Jigar

Music directors. Almost every Gujarati musician who makes it in Bombay stops taking Gujarati calls. These two have scored nine Gujarati films across eleven years while running one of Hindi cinema's busiest music rooms.

41Sanjeev Kumar

Actor. At twenty two he was playing an old man on a Bombay stage, and by the time he was old enough to play one honestly he was already dead.

42Saumya Joshi

Playwright, poet and screenwriter. He has two film credits in his life, and one of them is on the only Gujarati film ever to win the National Film Award for Best Feature Film.

43Siddharth Randeria

Theatre and film actor. He spent forty five years and more than twelve thousand live performances building an audience that did not need cinema, then at fifty nine he sold that audience a film, and it worked well enough that Marathi cinema came shopping for his part.

44Twinkle Vijaygiri

Producer and founder, Vijaygiri FilmOs. Gujarati cinema finances films by committee, eight names on Chhello Divas and eight on Kasoombo. Premji had one producer and Montu Ni Bittu had one producer, and both times it was her.

45Upendra Trivedi

Actor, director and producer. He was a young name in the cast list of the first Gujarati film ever to win a National Award, and thirty three years later, to get his industry another one, he had to produce it, direct it and act in it himself.

46Vaishal Shah

Film producer, founder of Jannock Films. He co-produced Amitabh Bachchan in a Hindi thriller in 2021, and twelve months later Bachchan was making his Gujarati film debut for the same two producers.

47Vijaygiri Bava

Filmmaker, screenwriter and producer. On Kasoombo he is the director, the co-writer, one of three editors and one of eight producers, which makes him the only person in Gujarati cinema who keeps taking four jobs on the same film.

48Vipul Mehta

Screenwriter and film director. Gujarati cinema was revived on the backs of college boys and best friends, and while that was happening Mehta quietly built a whole career out of their parents.

49Vipul Sharma

Screenwriter and film director. Almost every writer this industry trains uses a Gujarati credit as a passport to Mumbai, and he is the one who used his to build a company that keeps working in Ahmedabad.

50Yash Soni

Actor. At nineteen he played the same character in a Gujarati hit and in its Hindi remake, and the two sets of numbers that came back have shaped every choice he has made since.

How this works

Most "best of" lists are somebody's afternoon and a search engine's guess. This one has rules.

Career facts are verified against published biographies and an IMDb-sourced credits database of Gujarati films. Photographs are free-licensed files from Wikimedia Commons, reused with the attribution each licence requires, never lifted from a press agency. Social accounts are confirmed by scraping the live profile before anyone is called verified.

Box office figures carry the honest caveat they deserve. Gujarati cinema has no certified tracker, so every number here is labelled as industry-reported and given as a range where sources disagree. Where a figure could not be verified at all, the film is discussed and the gap is stated rather than filled with a guess.

An entry only appears if it has verified facts and either a free-licensed photograph or a confirmed account. Anyone who fails that test is left off and named in the page's own methodology, which is why some lists are shorter than a round number.
