Every regional film industry needs somewhere to train its leading actors, and for most of the last two decades Gujarati cinema did not have one. It had no studio system, no repertory pipeline into film, and for long stretches no films. So it outsourced the job. Esha Kansara is what that looks like on a single career: born in Ahmedabad, gone to Mumbai at eighteen, given five Hindi television shows and more than twenty five commercials by an industry that was not hers, and only then hired by the one that was. Her filmography is not a story of a Gujarati actress crossing over. It is a Gujarati actress crossing back.
The arc
01The exit at eighteen
She began Bharatanatyam at six and performed her arangetram at fourteen. In tenth grade she reached the top hundred of Dance India Dance. In twelfth she played the lead in a Gujarati stage production, Dikri Toh Devthi Vishesh, later retitled Ame Toh Khush-Khushal, in which her character is blind. Then, in 2010, she moved to Mumbai and enrolled at Mithibai College.
It is worth being precise about what she was leaving. In 2010 the Gujarati film industry had no lead-actress job to offer anyone. Hellaro was nine years away, Chhello Divas was five. Moving to Mumbai was not ambition getting the better of loyalty. It was the only route to a working week.
02Devki, Kittu, Radha, Misri, Amrita
Hindi television took her seriously immediately. Mukti Bandhan in 2011, adapted from Harkisan Mehta's novel, cast her as the female lead Devki Shah Virani. Then Kritika, called Kittu, in Ek Nanad Ki Khushiyon Ki Chaabi... Meri Bhabhi across 2013 and 2014. Radha opposite Shreyas Talpade in the sitcom My Name Ijj Lakhan in 2019.
The one that stuck was Misri Pandey, the bratty police officer in Maddam Sir on Sony SAB, a character she played across 2020, 2022 and 2023 and once described in an interview as almost a female version of Chulbul Pandey. Amrita Sakhuja in Zindagi Mere Ghar Aana followed in 2021 and 2022. That is a decade of continuous employment in a language she did not grow up performing in, built by an industry four hundred miles from her family.
03Called home by a remake
Her Gujarati debut came in 2017, and there is something quietly telling about which film it was. Duniyadari is a remake of a 2013 Marathi hit, written and directed by Shital Shah, still the only woman on English Wikipedia's list of Gujarati-language film directors. Kansara played Kavita Zaveri opposite Malhar Thakar.
Then the industry that had ignored her for seven years booked her four times in two. Mijaaj, her first action film, and Vandha Villas and Midnights with Menka all arrived in 2018, three of them with Thakar. Prem Prakaran followed in 2022, a love triangle with Gaurav Paswala and Deeksha Joshi. Seven years of nothing, then a queue.
04The arithmetic of 3 Ekka
3 Ekka, released on 25 August 2023 and directed by Rajesh Sharma, put her in an ensemble with Malhar Thakar, Yash Soni, Mitra Gadhavi, Kinjal Rajpriya and Tarjanee Bhadla. She plays Jhanvi, a school craft teacher who will not let her boyfriend gamble his way out of his friends' problem. It reported roughly Rs 25 crore worldwide and, on release, stood as the second highest grossing Gujarati film ever made behind Chaal Jeevi Laiye!.
She was thirty one, and thirteen years past the day she left Ahmedabad. Two more arrived in 2024: Builder Boys, and Fakt Purusho Maate, the film that got Amitabh Bachchan to make a special appearance in a Gujarati release. In 2025 she took Shubhchintak for Manasi Parekh's Soul Sutra. Her Instagram bio, scraped on 29 July 2026, describes her as natural on screen and dramatic in life, and lists a company she is building called One For Love Productions. Two TEDx talks sit alongside all of it.
The work that matters
Not her biggest film and not her best performance. It is the only title in her filmography directed by a woman, and it is the door back in. A career that took seven years to start in its own language deserves to have that door named.
The commercial proof. It reported around Rs 25 crore and, at release, sat second on the all-time Gujarati list. It also settled the older question of whether a decade of Hindi television leaves an actor able to hold a Gujarati opening weekend.
Included for what it says about the ceiling, not the performance. A Gujarati comedy that could book Amitabh Bachchan for a special appearance is a film operating at a budget and a level of access the industry did not have when she left it in 2010.
