Maulik Nayak

Premji: Rise of a Warrior opened on 10 July 2015. Vijaygiri Bava directed it, Twinkle Vijaygiri produced it, and its structure was unusual for a Gujarati debut feature: a boy from a Kutchi village arrives in Ahmedabad carrying a tragedy he cannot name, with Abhimanyu Singh from Hindi cinema playing the father and a cast otherwise built out of Gujarati theatre. Nayak played Mukesh, one of Premji's three friends, alongside Namrata Pathak and Malhar Pandya.

It took ten Gujarat State Awards for the 2015 round, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor. Very few actors make their feature debut inside a film that clears double figures at the state awards. Fewer still stay in the same director's address book for the next decade, which is what happened next.

Hellaro released on 8 November 2019. Abhishek Shah's film about women in a 1970s Rann of Kutch village who find a drummer and start to dance won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film at the 66th National Film Awards, the first Gujarati film ever to take it, and its thirteen actresses shared the Special Jury Award as a single citation. Nayak is in the other half of that cast, as Bhaglo, one of the men whose authority the film exists to interrogate. Playing the thing the film is arguing against is an unglamorous job and the picture does not work without it.

Three months earlier, on 23 August 2019, Montu Ni Bittu had opened with his name on the poster. Vijaygiri Bava directing again, Twinkle Vijaygiri producing again, story and dialogue by Raam Mori, and Nayak as Montu opposite Aarohi Patel's Bittu, playing a man in love with a childhood friend everyone else has filed under friend. Gujarati Mid-day rated it 3.5 out of 5 and Bava took Best Director at the 19th Transmedia Gujarati Screen and Stage Awards for it.

Chhutti Jashe Chhakka in 2018 with Janki Bodiwala and Hemang Dave. Medal in 2022, where he is Raman in a film about an English teacher who turns down a private school to teach at a government one, with Kinjal Rajpriya and Jayesh More, lyrics by Niren Bhatt, rated 4 out of 5 by Gujarati Mid-Day. 21 Divas in 2023. Ram Bharosey in 2024. Chaatar in 2025.

Then Chaniya Toli, released nationwide on 21 October 2025, produced by Anand Pandit and Vaishal Shah, with Yash Soni leading a village heist comedy. It took a reported Rs 1.41 crore on its opening day, the highest first day gross recorded for a Gujarati film, beating Fakt Mahilao Maate, and had crossed a reported Rs 13.71 crore by its second weekend. Nayak plays the reporter. That is the shape of the whole career: the record breaking film, and a part with a job description rather than a name.

Kamthaan released on 2 February 2024, a crime comedy produced by Abhishek Shah with an ensemble of roughly fifty actors and a score by Mehul Surti, who researched what small town Gujarati band baaja music sounded like twenty three years earlier and built the soundtrack out of local instruments and Indian banjo. Nayak made his debut as a playback singer on it.

The same year, Bandish Projekt, Mayur Narvekar's electronic project and one of the longest running acts in Indian dance music, released Dakla 9 with Aishwarya Joshi and Maulik Nayak on vocals through Bheja Fry Records. The Dakla series is folk devotional material rebuilt for club systems. An actor from Gujarati films singing on it is not a novelty booking, it is a working vocalist credit, and it is the first line of his own Instagram bio, ahead of any film.

The temptation with an actor like this is to write him up as underrated and leave it there. The record says something more specific. Between 2015 and 2025 Gujarati cinema produced roughly four films that will still be discussed in twenty years: the ten award state sweep, the National Award winner, the Raam Mori adaptation and the box office record holder. He is in all four, and he was the lead in one.

That is not a story about being overlooked. It is a story about a very particular skill, which is being the actor a director trusts to hold a scene without owning it. Vijaygiri Bava has used him twice, Abhishek Shah directed him in Hellaro and then produced the film he sang on, and when the Jannock and Anand Pandit machine assembled the biggest opening in the language's history, he was on that call sheet too.
